Tips for house training a good dog
Going out for a walk is a good way to solve dog problems, socialize and desensitize dogs, and make them adapt to the owner’s life. However, if you can’t go out often, how can you train them at home?
My method is to integrate sensory stimulation training into the dog’s life at home. According to the different senses of the dog, the stimulation that will be encountered is divided into hearing, touch, vision, smell and specific stimulation.
Because the time at home is longer, the training frequency will be higher, which can lay a good foundation for a stable personality and going out for a walk.
01
Within the critical value, gradually enhance the stimulation
Each dog is sensitive to different things and degrees. Find out the sensitive source that makes the dog emotionally excited, and the stress stimulation should be gradually enhanced within the maximum range that the dog can bear
The critical value is set within the acceptable range where the dog is not overly panicked and does not run away. If the stimulation makes the dog too nervous, it will not be able to let the dog feel and learn the information.
Because the owner is a person that the dog is familiar with and trusts, you impact the dog’s senses, and the dog is more receptive. With frequent stimulation, the dog will gradually get used to it.
02
Actively create situations to stimulate different senses
The owner can create stimulating situations and often let the dog experience stimulation that it is not used to in life.
The easiest way is that the owner can add various sensory stimulations to the dog when petting the dog and before feeding. Fun and relaxing interactions make it easier for the dog to accept sensory stimulation, and training can also satisfy the owner’s mood for petting the dog.
1.Hearing:
Create different sudden sounds in life. For example:
Knock on the bowl before eating; the dog is lying down obediently, but suddenly clap your hands;
Step on the ground suddenly to make a noise before giving snacks; drop objects near the dog;
Break a plastic bag (simulate thunder);
Operate equipment near the dog (vacuum cleaner/hair dryer);
Touch:
You can often touch the puppy in different ways, for example:
Slap the dog’s body when brushing the dog’s hair; accidentally poke the dog’s sensitive parts (such as the abdomen) when touching the dog;
Pick up the dog with all four feet off the ground, strengthen the stimulation and slightly play with the dog in the air; walk past the dog and suddenly touch it;
Adapt to cutting nails, touch the paw or nails with nail clippers (without cutting); touch the dog’s paws.
Pet the dog while it is eating.
- Visual:
Give the dog some visually exaggerated movements, or changes in clothing. For example:
Do exaggerated body movements before playing with food; wear a special hat to appear in front of the dog;
- Specific stimulation
Feed with the palm of your hand;
Let the dog get used to eating the jerky in your hand (extend the contact between the dog’s mouth and you), occasionally touch the teeth, and take things from the dog’s mouth.
I think the above stimulations are very necessary to avoid guarding food. You can let the owner take things from the mouth when the dog eats by mistake; use it when going to the hospital for examination.
This kind of training will cause more saliva, please be patient for the dog.
In addition, you can invite strangers and dogs to your home.
03
Indoor consumption of physical energy
The dog’s excess physical strength and energy are often the root cause of behavioral problems. Physical strength with nowhere to vent may make the dog anxious, chewing or barking, so we provide several ways to consume the dog’s physical energy at home.
Play games with the dog, chase the ball in a small space and interact with the dog, and use games to get the dog running.
Chewing toys or bones can consume physical energy, soothe emotions, and clean teeth.
04
Skill training
Skill training is best done before feeding meals and snacks. A hungry dog will be more willing to learn these skills.
Basic skill training includes sit, lie down, wait, call back, and NO. The training of these commands can be integrated into the owner’s daily life, for example:
Let the dog sit down before giving food, put the food in front of the dog and let him wait for more than 10 seconds. When the owner is watching TV or computer, you can let the dog practice the command of lying down beside you, so that it can accompany you during work or leisure time.

Key tips
If the dog is in the puppy stage, all the above stimuli will be easy to get started.
But if you have an adult dog at home, you should pay attention to the dog’s reaction, especially when there are behavioral problems. Please cooperate with desensitization skills training, be more patient, and do it more times, you will see good results.
Finally, when the dog does well, don’t forget to give rewards.
